1.
When spring returned, to restore delight and provoke jealousy, the queen wanted to show her old husband the king that she was lovable. She invited the most handsome young men and beautiful maidens throughout the land to come to the castle for a joyful ball. But the old king stopped the dance because he feared that someone would run off with the queen in this lovely month of April. His efforts, however, were in vain. She wanted nothing to do with the old man. She needed a lighthearted lad who could give her pleasure. Anyone who saw her dance and move knew there was nobody in the world like our happy queen.

“Let’s love and pray to the Virgin Mary, so that the shameless devil doesn’t lead us astray or into sin.” This cantigas tells the story about a very pious abbess who was betrayed by the devil and was made pregnant by a man from Bologna. The nuns in the convent informed the Bishop of Cologne. The bishop came to the abbey to see for himself but the abbess prayed to the Virgin Mary who relieved her of the baby.

O Peregrino 03:07
4.
Mother, I have two lovers and I don’t know which to take. One is a tailor, the other has nothing. But I am unfaithful to the tailor and I love the other with all my heart. Throw water in front of your door, my love, and when I go by, I’ll slip and fall. When your parents come out, I’ll make myself known to them. Come, my jewel, my beauty, see where I live: between two high mountains where I die without you.
5.
Ave virgo 03:12
Hail Virgin of virgins, shrine of the word made flesh, who for men salvation drips milk and honey. You bore the lord, you were a rush basket for Moses, O from your rays, the sun goes forth and the stars bring forth a fountain of light.

There’s a big difference between “Ave” (prayer) and Eve. Eve took us away from paradise and God. Ave brings us back.
8.
Imperaynz 04:44
Empress of paradise’s joyful city, pure of sin, Mother of God, virgin with the angel’s face, you who are blessed by God, have pity on those who believe and pray for them to the Heavenly King
9.
Pange melos 05:49
O tearful elegy, sing a plaintive melody. A time of mourning has come, a time bereft of joy… The sinking star of the Rhine looks down on to the Latin soil. The star falls. The star’s fall enshrouds the earth in darkness…
